Flexible Working – the future?

More people are making flexible working requests, such as part-time or flexi time to make the most of modern technology and work from somewhere other than the office.

In particular, increasing numbers of women are setting up their own businesses to get more flexibility between work and family life, especially after having a baby.

In order to adapt to these changes employers need to keep abreast of the current rules and regulations on flexible working requests and indirect sex discrimination so far as working mothers are concerned. Whilst the employee may be looking for a good work life balance, the employer needs at all times to create their own balance between the interests of their employees and the interests of the business

Research commissioned by the Minister for Women and Equality, Harriet Harman, reveals that there are now more than one million self-employed women in the UK. That’s an increase of 17% since 2000 although they still only make up a quarter of the total number of self-employed.

Ministers are therefore starting a publicity campaign to encourage more women to set up their own businesses but it is not a decision to take lightly. Anyone thinking of setting up a business should make sure they do their homework first and seek advice on a range of subjects including lease of premises, business contracts and employment matters.
